What Are Sports Injuries?
The injuries that happen while playing or exercising is sports injury. Most sports injuries are due to accidental fall and other activity performed in the sport, some injuries happen due to poor training, poor attire or improper gear etc. A person indulging in a sports activity should be fully fit. The warm-up exercises are very important.
Some of the common sports related injuries are sprains, knee injuries, swelling, pain, fractures and dislocation. Going by the nature of injury, they can be classified as Acute or Chronic injury. A sudden pain or swelling while playing or exercising as a result of sprain, fracture etc. is acute injury. Chronic injury is a condition developed over a period, inhibiting normal movement such as pain, swelling etc. A chronic injury may result in acute pain (injury) and an acute pain can lead to a chronic condition. Calf Tear refers to the tears in the muscle at the back of the calf and can be very painful. Calf tear can result from running, accelerating, or sudden change in direction. A previous calf tear that is not properly rehabilitated can also easily breakdown. Generally calf tear is cured by adequate rest, ice pack, compression and elevation. Anti-inflammatory tablets can also help. Calf tear is cured in many cases by physiotherapy alone while some may still require surgical assistance.
ACL or Anterior Cruciate Ligament tear is caused by the sudden change in direction or stoppage of movement during a sports activity. Though not very common, this is one of the most severe sports related injuries. A completely torn ligament requires surgical intervention and may still cut short one’s sports career.
More than half of all sports injuries are knee injuries also known as Patellofemoral syndrome. (Patella – Kneecap) Knee injuries are caused by the knee cap moving against the leg bone damaging the tissues, causing intolerable pain. Low impact exercises are advised to the leg muscles strong and it can take up to 6 weeks to heal. Right kind of shoes reduces the chances of sustaining a knee injury. Proper rest, icing and adequate warm up exercises are recommended. Often, Patellofemoral syndrome is mistaken for other conditions such as meniscus tear and therefore, accurate diagnosis is necessary.
Iliotibial band syndrome
Another injury pertaining to the knee is the Iliotibial band syndrome which is signified by a pain outside the knee. This is also one of the most common sports injuries. ITBS is caused by inappropriate footwear, foot position and running style. The treatment methodology for ITBS includes, PRICE, physiotherapy and stretches. (PRICE is a term used for treatment of injuries viz., Protection, Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation)
Groin pull is the muscle strain around the groin area and occurs due to overtraining. The Groin pull often occurs in sports such as Tennis and Football where the players are required to change direction very frequently and suddenly. While minor groin pull will eventually settle, sometimes this may require a longer rehabilitation programme.
Repeated use of the elbow during sports action causes tiny tears in the elbow ligaments. Tennis Elbow (Epicondylitis) often occurs in persons over 30 years. The treatment is through rest, ice, physiotherapy and anti-inflammatory drugs. Surgery may be required in some cases. Elbow braces and exercises aimed at strengthening the forearm prevent occurrence of tennis elbow.
Shoulder injuries, including dislocations, sprains and strains, make up 20% of all sports injuries. Shoulder injuries are often caused due to overexertion. Some shoulder injuries in games such as football, rugby etc. occur as a result of heavy fall on the shoulder. This may result in fractures in the collarbone.
Early assessment is required in case of fractures and dislocations. The treatment is dependent on the type of injury. While sprains and tears can be treated with adequate rest and physiotherapy, dislocations and fractures may require surgery.
This is one of the most common sports accidents in activities such as running and kicking. Often related to Football and Rugby, these injuries range from minor to most severe keeping players off the field for several months.
Recovery from a hamstring strain could be a slow process. The assessment is often done through an MRI scan.
Sciatica, also known as Low Back pain affects persons involved in cycling, running, golf, tennis and baseball. Sciatica is generally caused by improper stretching. But runners with one leg slightly longer than the other can also experience sciatica. Bulging disc and back spasms also result in low back pain. While Sciatica and Bulging disc may require immediate medical attention and treatment, back spasms can be treated with rest, ice and anti-inflammatory medication.
Shin splint (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome) is a condition that runners experience as a pain on the inside of the shin during or after running. These injuries occur in sports that involve running. In some cases, the only symptom can be inflammation on the tibia. The causes could be poor nutrition, foot position during running and inappropriate footwear. Treatment in most cases involves a physiotherapist and a custom made shoe that can take the pressure away from the problem area (Tibia).
